Press Release from WI DATCP

This press release is from WI DATCP. In an effort to prevent the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI)(H5N1) in dairy cattle, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is requiring Influenza A testing prior to movement of lactating dairy cattle to fairs or exhibitions effective beginning June 19, 2024. The release has more information about the directive.

This requirement will be in effect for local fairs, district and state breed shows, state fair, etc. In addition, please keep this in mind if you are hosting any upcoming 4-H dairy clinics, meeting, shows, etc. where lactating dairy cattle are planned to be present – these events would be included with this order. As always, 4-H families should connect with their local veterinarian for more information and best practices working with their animals.

More information about Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) in Dairy Cattle can be found on the DATCP site: https://datcp.wi.gov/Pages/Programs_Services/AvianInfluenzaCattle.aspx
